Job Summary:
The Theater Technician is responsible for supporting the technical operations and production needs of the theater. This role requires a high level of expertise in various technical aspects of theater arts, including lighting, sound, rigging, set construction, and general stage management. The Theater Technician will collaborate closely with the Technical Director, production team, and other staff members to ensure the successful execution of performances and events.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist in the setup, operation, and maintenance of lighting, sound, and audio-visual equipment for performances, rehearsals, and events.
- Perform routine inspections, troubleshooting, and repairs of technical equipment to maintain optimal functionality and safety.
- Collaborate with the Technical Director and other team members to develop and implement effective lighting designs, soundscapes, and special effects for productions.
- Set up and dismantle stage sets, props, and equipment according to production requirements.
- Operate and maintain rigging systems, ensuring proper installation and adherence to safety standards.
- Assist in the coordination and execution of stage cues, including lighting and sound cues, during performances.
- Collaborate with the Technical Director in the recruitment, training, and supervision of technical crew members and volunteers.
- Maintain an inventory of technical equipment, supplies, and materials, ensuring appropriate stock levels and making recommendations for equipment upgrades or replacements as needed.
- Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, including proper storage and handling of hazardous materials.
- Stay updated on industry trends and advancements in theater technology, sharing knowledge and implementing best practices as appropriate.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent; relevant technical certifications or vocational training is a plus.
- Proven experience working as a Theater Technician or similar role, preferably within a professional theater environment.
- Comprehensive knowledge of theater production processes, including lighting, sound, rigging, and set construction.
- Proficiency in operating and maintaining various theater equipment, such as lighting consoles, audio mixing boards, projectors, and rigging systems.
- Familiarity with industry-standard software and tools for theater production, including lighting design software and digital audio workstations.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot technical issues effectively under pressure.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to multitask and prioritize competing demands.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse team members and stakeholders.
- Knowledge of health and safety regulations related to theater operations and experience in implementing safety protocols.
- Physical stamina and ability to perform tasks that may involve heavy lifting, climbing, and working at heights.
- Flexibility to work irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as dictated by production schedules.
